How UK university averages work

UK universities use a credit-weighted average to combine module marks. Each module is worth a certain number of credits — typically 15 or 20 — and your average is the sum of each mark multiplied by its credits, divided by the total credits. A 40-credit module counts twice as much as a 20-credit one toward your year average.

When it comes to your final degree classification, most universities weight your years differently. Common patterns exist — for example, many courses discount or exclude Year 1, and weight later years more heavily — but the exact split varies between institutions and programmes. This calculator asks you to enter your own year weights rather than assuming one, so you can model whatever your course handbook specifies.

Start by adding your modules for a single year. If your degree spans multiple years with different weightings, tick the box to add additional years and enter the percentage weight for each. The calculator combines everything into a single overall average.

Classification is not the same as an average

This calculates your weighted average — it doesn't apply your university's specific classification algorithm (some use ‘best X modules’, borderline uplift rules, or exam boards with discretion). Check your course handbook or programme regulations for how your university converts an average into a final classification.

This is a calculation tool, not a statement of any university's official grading policy. Confirm your own weighting with your institution.
