How UCAS Tariff points work

The UCAS Tariff is a points system used to translate different qualifications into a single numerical score. Universities use this score to set and assess entry requirements, making it easier to compare applicants who may have taken different types of qualifications.

Each grade for each qualification type is assigned a fixed tariff value. For example, an A at A-level is worth 48 points, while a Distinction in a BTEC National Extended Certificate is also worth 48. The system is designed so that qualifications of similar size and difficulty carry similar tariff weight.

Not all universities use the tariff system — many top universities make offers in terms of specific grades rather than points. But the tariff is widely used across the sector, especially for courses with flexible or mixed entry requirements. Always confirm how your chosen university makes offers.

Once you've accepted a place, your final degree result is scored differently — see how UK degree classification works.
