UCAS Tariff points for Scottish Highers
Scottish Highers and A-levels are not directly comparable qualification sizes — a Higher is typically a one-year course, an A-level two years. UCAS Tariff reflects this: an A-level A (48 points) is worth more than a Higher A (33 points) even though both are top grades.
International Baccalaureate (IB) Tariff Points
The IB Diploma is not scored as a single qualification on the UCAS Tariff. Instead, UCAS awards points per component — each Higher Level subject, each Standard Level subject, the Extended Essay, and Theory of Knowledge — and the Diploma total is the sum of all of them. This is the current system, in place since the 2017 UCAS Tariff reform. Some other sites still quote the old pre-2017 whole-diploma scale, which used a single conversion from the overall IB score out of 45 — that system is no longer in use.
If you are combining IB results with other qualifications, you can total these points yourself using our UCAS Tariff points calculator.

UCAS Tariff points for IB Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge
For example, a student with HL grades 7, 6, 5, SL grades 6, 5, 4, an EE grade B and a TOK grade B scores 56 + 48 + 32 + 24 + 16 + 12 + 10 + 10 = 208 UCAS Tariff points.
T-Level Tariff Points
T-Levels are graded as a whole qualification, not per-subject like A-levels. There are five overall grade bands, each with a fixed UCAS Tariff value.
| Grade | Tariff Points |
|---|---|
| Distinction* (D*) | 168 |
| Distinction (D) | 144 |
| Merit (M) | 120 |
| Pass, grades A*–C (P) | 96 |

Access to HE Diploma Tariff Points
The Access to HE Diploma is marked across 45 Level 3 credits, each graded Distinction, Merit or Pass. UCAS uses a full lookup table covering every possible mix of grades rather than a simple per-credit formula. Rather than list all combinations, here are the three "pure" profiles as reference points.
| Grade | Tariff Points |
|---|---|
| All Distinction (45 credits) | 144 |
| All Merit (45 credits) | 96 |
| All Pass (45 credits) | 48 |
UCAS Tariff points for Access to HE Diploma pure profiles
Most students have a mixed profile of Distinctions, Merits and Passes. For your exact combination, use UCAS's own Access to HE Tariff calculator at ucas.com — the scoring isn't a simple average, so we're not guessing at the hundreds of possible combinations here.
How to read this table
The UCAS Tariff translates different qualifications into a single points scale so universities can compare applicants who have studied different subjects and qualification types. Each grade for each qualification type has a fixed tariff value — the tables above show every value for the qualifications covered here.
Not all courses use tariff points. Many universities, especially the most selective, list specific grade requirements (e.g. AAB at A-level) instead of a points total. Always check the entry requirements for your chosen course before relying on tariff points. If you are combining grades across qualification types, our UCAS Points Calculator adds them up for you.
