How to convert a salary to an hourly rate
Converting between a salary and an hourly rate comes down to how many hours you are paid for in a year. This calculator uses exactly 52 weeks a year. To go from an hourly rate to a salary, it multiplies your rate by your weekly hours to get weekly pay, then by 52 to get annual pay. Monthly pay is annual pay divided by 12. To go the other way, it divides your salary by 52 and then by your weekly hours.
Your daily rate is your weekly pay divided by the number of days you work each week. On a 37.5-hour, five-day week, that is 7.5 hours of pay per day. If you work four longer days, set days per week to 4 and your daily rate goes up while your weekly pay stays the same.
Salaries on banded pay scales are easier to convert once you know your exact figure. If you're on NHS terms, use the NHS Pay Calculator to check your banded salary under Agenda for Change, then enter it here with your contracted hours. Teacher salaries are set as annual ranges rather than hourly rates, so teachers converting a pro-rata contract can cross-check the full-time range with the teacher pay calculator before working out an hourly figure.
Because every one of the 52 weeks counts as a paid week, the results assume your holiday is paid at your normal rate, as it is for most salaried employees. If you are paid only for the hours you work, your real annual pay depends on how many weeks you work and how your holiday is paid. And if part of your pay is in lieu of annual leave, see the holiday entitlement calculator to work out how much paid leave you should be getting.
By default the figures are gross pay. Switch to “After tax” to see an estimate of take-home pay using 2026/27 Income Tax and employee National Insurance rates for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Tax is always worked out on your annual pay first, then divided back into monthly, weekly, daily and hourly amounts, because the Personal Allowance and tax bands are set per year. The estimate does not cover Scottish Income Tax, student loan repayments or pension contributions.
